Getting cited in AI answers once is not the goal; staying cited is. AI Visibility Monitoring is our monthly retainer: we re-test the same fixed set of buyer prompts across the major AI engines every month and report whether your presence is growing or shrinking, against your competitors, with the numbers to prove it. It turns "are we visible in ChatGPT?" from a guess into a tracked metric. If you've completed a GEO Build Sprint, this is how you protect and extend the gains; if you're starting fresh, it begins with an AI Visibility Audit that sets your baseline.

The problem monitoring solves

AI visibility is not a fixed asset you can earn and forget. Engines retrain and re-rank, retrieval behaviour shifts, competitors publish and earn their own citations, and the information an engine repeats about you can drift or become inaccurate — all without any warning in your analytics, because there was never a click to track. Without monitoring, the first sign that you've lost a cited position is usually a lost deal nobody can explain. A monthly, like-for-like measurement against a fixed prompt set catches the drift early: you see a metric slip before it becomes a revenue problem, and you act on evidence instead of reacting to a quarter-end surprise.

What we track — the five AI Visibility metrics

Our measurement framework is built on five metrics, re-tested every month so each one has a month-over-month delta. Brand Mention Rate — the share of your target prompts where an engine names your brand at all, cited or not. Citation Rate — how often the engine actually links or attributes a source to your website, which is stronger than a bare mention. Share of Voice (SoV) — how often engines name you versus a fixed set of competitors across the same prompts, so you see relative position, not just your own number. Citation Source Distribution — which types of source the engines are pulling from (your own site, directories, reviews, publications, community threads), so you know where to invest. Conversion Contribution — where you've granted analytics access, the organic sessions and qualified leads tied to the pages involved, connecting visibility to business outcomes rather than leaving it as a vanity number.

Our method

We measure the same way every month so the comparison is honest. We run a fixed set of 20–30 real buyer prompts — the questions your customers actually ask — across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. Because LLM answers are non-deterministic, we run each prompt three times and aggregate, rather than trusting a single response, and we re-test monthly on a consistent schedule. The prompt set and competitor list stay fixed unless you ask us to evolve them, which is what makes the month-over-month deltas meaningful. Every result is dated, so you can always see exactly when a reading was taken.

What's in the monthly report

Each month you receive a report built for decisions, not decoration:

  • The five metrics, each with its month-over-month delta and a short read on what moved.
  • Share of voice versus your named competitors, so you see whether you're gaining or losing ground relative to them.
  • New and lost citations — which pages or sources the engines started or stopped citing since last month.
  • Source-type shifts — changes in where engines are drawing answers from in your category.
  • Accuracy and sentiment changes — whether what the engines say about you is correct and how it's framed.
  • A short, prioritised next-actions list — the two or three moves most likely to improve next month's numbers.

Why it's a recurring service (not a one-off)

The honest reason monitoring is monthly is that the thing being measured changes monthly. AI engines update their models and retrieval systems on their own cadence; a prompt that cited you in one model version may cite a competitor after an update. Your competitors are also working — earning citations, publishing content, correcting their entity data — so share of voice is a moving contest, not a finished score. And the facts engines repeat about you can go stale or wrong as your business changes. A single snapshot ages quickly; a monthly cadence keeps the picture current and lets you respond while a change is still cheap to fix. This is the same reason rank tracking became standard in traditional SEO — except AI answers move faster and are less visible by default.

What you receive (deliverables)

  • A monthly AI Visibility report covering the five metrics with deltas, SoV, new/lost citations, source-type shifts, accuracy and sentiment, and prioritised next actions.
  • A consistent, dated dataset you can audit — no black-box scoring.
  • Ongoing execution of the agreed next actions and continued third-party citation work (scope depends on tier).
  • A standing line to us for interpretation, so the report is understood, not just delivered.

Why Generative Engine Agency (differentiation)

We compete on method and evidence. We publish our five-metric framework and our testing method openly; our reports are auditable numbers against a fixed prompt set, not a proprietary score you can't interrogate; and we state the non-determinism caveat plainly rather than selling false precision. We will also tell you honestly if monitoring isn't yet worth it for your category — if too few of your buyers research with AI assistants, we'll say so.

Pricing (USD — transparent, confirm before publishing)

ServiceScopePrice (USD)
AI Visibility Audit20–30 prompts, baseline SOV, prioritised fix list$300–800
GEO Build SprintCitable content, schema, entity/NAP, crawler access, citation groundwork$1,500–6,000
Monthly Retainer (AI Visibility Monitoring)Monthly 5-metric tracking + report + next actions + continued citations$800–4,000/mo
Final tier follows your audit and goals. What moves the retainer price: number of prompts and languages tracked, number of engines and competitors, reporting depth, and how much execution (content and citations) is included alongside the tracking.

An honest note on non-determinism

We will never pretend AI answers are stable when they aren't. The same prompt can return different answers on different runs, for different users, in different locations, and after an engine update. That is why we run each prompt multiple times, aggregate, date every reading, and report ranges and trends rather than a single hero number. It also means a one-month dip is not automatically a failure, and a one-month spike is not automatically a win — the value is in the trend across months, which is exactly what a recurring retainer is designed to capture.

Risks & limitations (so you can decide clearly)

GEO monitoring is newer and less settled than SEO rank tracking. We cannot guarantee that your metrics will improve every month, or that any engine will cite you — we measure the reality honestly and recommend the actions most likely to help. Results depend on your starting position, competition, and how fully you act on the next-actions list. Some engines limit automated querying, so our method reflects practical sampling, not an exhaustive census of every possible answer. And because engine behaviour shifts, monitoring is a discipline you maintain, not a problem you close.

Evidence & team

[E-E-A-T — fill with real data: Generative Engine Agency is led by {{FOUNDER}}, {{X}}+ years in SEO/AI search; add credentials, LinkedIn, photo, and genuine client reporting examples only once permissioned. Do not publish invented metrics.]

Start with a baseline, then track it monthly

Monitoring only means something against a baseline, so the entry point is an AI Visibility Audit: we establish where you stand today across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews versus your competitors. From there, the monthly retainer keeps the same prompt set under watch and reports the movement. If the audit surfaces big gaps, a GEO Build Sprint fixes them first. New to the category? Questions, answered
01What is AI visibility monitoring, and what do I actually get each month?
AI visibility monitoring is a recurring service that tracks how often, and how accurately, AI engines mention and cite your business for the questions your customers ask. Each month we re-run the same fixed set of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, then send a report built for decisions. It contains our five metrics — brand mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, citation-source distribution and conversion contribution — each with a month-over-month delta; your share of voice against named competitors; the citations you gained and lost; shifts in where engines draw answers from; changes in the accuracy and sentiment of what they say about you; and a short, prioritised list of the two or three actions most likely to improve next month. It is a tracked metric, not a guess.
02What are the five metrics you track?
We track five, re-tested monthly so each carries a delta. Brand Mention Rate is the share of your target prompts where an engine names your brand at all. Citation Rate is how often the engine actually links or attributes your website, which is stronger than a bare mention. Share of Voice compares how often engines name you versus a fixed competitor set across the same prompts, so you see relative position. Citation Source Distribution shows which source types the engines pull from — your site, directories, reviews, publications, community threads — so you know where to invest. Conversion Contribution, where you grant analytics access, ties the relevant pages to organic sessions and qualified leads, connecting visibility to business outcomes. Together they give a rounded picture rather than a single number that's easy to misread.
03Why is this a monthly subscription instead of a one-time report?
Because the thing being measured changes monthly. AI engines update their models and retrieval systems on their own schedules, so a prompt that cited you under one version may cite a competitor after an update. Your competitors are also actively earning citations and improving their own entity data, which means share of voice is a moving contest rather than a fixed score. And the facts engines repeat about you can drift or go stale as your business changes. A single snapshot ages quickly and can mislead; a monthly cadence keeps the picture current and lets you respond while a change is still cheap to fix. It is the same logic that made rank tracking standard in traditional SEO — except AI answers move faster and are far less visible in your analytics by default.
04How much does monitoring cost?
The monthly retainer runs $800–4,000 per month, with the tier set after your audit and based on your goals. A few concrete factors move the price: how many prompts and languages we track, how many engines and competitors are in scope, how deep the reporting goes, and how much execution — content updates and continued third-party citation work — is included alongside the tracking itself. The lighter end is tracking and reporting; the higher end bundles in ongoing implementation. For context, the AI Visibility Audit that sets your baseline is $300–800 and a GEO Build Sprint, if you need to fix gaps first, is $1,500–6,000. Pricing shown here is indicative and confirmed in your proposal, and there's no long lock-in required to start.
05Which AI engines and how many prompts do you monitor?
We track the engines your buyers actually use: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Google Gemini and Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic's Claude. The standard method uses a fixed set of 20–30 real buyer prompts — the specific questions your customers ask when researching a purchase — and we run each prompt three times per engine, every month, because LLM answers are non-deterministic and a single response is not reliable. The prompt set and competitor list stay fixed month to month so the deltas are meaningful; we only change them when you ask us to, for example when you launch a new service. If your audience leans on particular engines or a second language, we weight the monitoring toward where your buyers actually are rather than spreading effort evenly for its own sake.
06How do you handle the fact that AI answers change every time you ask?
We treat non-determinism as a measurement design problem, not something to hide. The same prompt can return different answers on different runs, for different users, in different locations, and after an engine update. So we run each prompt multiple times — our standard is three runs per engine — and aggregate the results rather than trusting one response. We date every reading, report ranges and trends instead of a single hero figure, and keep the prompt set fixed so month-over-month comparisons are like-for-like. This also shapes how we read the data: a single month's dip isn't automatically a failure, and a single spike isn't automatically a win. The signal lives in the trend across several months, which is precisely what a recurring monitoring retainer is built to capture and what a one-off snapshot cannot.
07Do I need a Build Sprint first, or can I just start monitoring?
You can start with monitoring alone, and sometimes that's the right first move — if you want to understand your current position before committing to implementation. In that case we begin with an AI Visibility Audit to set a baseline, then track it monthly. However, if the audit shows you're largely absent from AI answers because of fixable issues — content engines can't extract, inconsistent entity data, blocked crawlers — then monitoring alone will mostly document that you're not visible. In that situation a GEO Build Sprint first gives the monitoring something to measure improvement against. We'll give you an honest recommendation after the audit: monitor now, build first, or in some cases wait, if too few of your buyers currently research with AI assistants.
08Can you guarantee my AI visibility will improve month over month?
No, and we're direct about that. We cannot guarantee that your metrics rise every month or that any engine will cite you, because engines decide what to say using models and sources outside any agency's control, and their behaviour shifts over time. Some months a competitor's work or an engine update will move a number against you despite everything being done right. What we can commit to is measuring your reality honestly against a fixed prompt set, explaining what drove each change, and recommending the actions most likely to help next month. Our value is accurate, auditable tracking plus informed guidance — not a promise of a straight line up, which no legitimate provider can offer. If a month goes backward, you'll hear why from us, not discover it later.
09How is this different from a social listening or brand monitoring tool?
Traditional brand or social monitoring tracks mentions on social platforms, news and the open web. AI visibility monitoring tracks something different and newer: whether AI answer engines name and cite you when people ask buying questions, and how you compare with competitors inside those answers. The data source is the engines themselves — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and the rest — queried with a fixed buyer prompt set, not a social firehose. We also track things a listening tool doesn't: citation rate versus bare mention, share of voice against a named competitor set, which source types engines rely on, and whether the facts they repeat about you are accurate. And because answers are non-deterministic, our method is built around repeated runs and monthly re-testing rather than a continuous keyword stream.
10What do you need from us, and how do we get started?
Very little to begin. To set the baseline we need your website, your target market, and the names of two or three competitors you want measured against; from that we build the prompt set. To report Conversion Contribution we need read access to your analytics, though the other four metrics work without it. If you want the retainer to include execution — content updates and citation work — we'll also need edit access to your site or coordination with your developer, plus your correct business information so any entity work stays consistent. Getting started is a short path: request an AI Visibility Audit, review the baseline and our recommendation, then choose a monitoring tier. The prompt set is yours; we keep it fixed so your monthly numbers stay comparable.
